Mary Poppins ![]() [Photo: Original "Mary Poppins " movie poster from 1964.] One of Disney's most successful films of all time, Mary Poppins comes alive! In this 1964 classic, a wealthy banker's children lose their nanny due to her frustration with them the search is on for a replacement. A change in the wind blows in an assertive nanny who matches the qualifications of the children, but not their father. As Mary Poppins helps them magically explore the world around them the father grows increasingly disapproving of her methods, and must eventually deal with his own distance from his children.
The film won five Academy Awards, including Julie Andrews for best leading actress, best song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” best original score, and best special visual effects. It stars Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, David Tomlinson, Glynis Johns, Karen Dotrice, and Matthew Garber. The scene presented in The Great Movie Ride is from the final scene of the film where Mary Poppins and her renaissance-man companion, Bert, sing the duet “Chim Chim Cher-ee”. The background is filled with silhouettes of cheerful chimmney sweeps dancing. Mary is holding her umbrella as she begins to fly away into the skyline of London.
